I Am Here is a new, multimedia creation by Gina Lori Riley in collaboration with several cross-disciplinary artists. The vision of the work is focused on pushing boundaries of innovation and on continuing to create new work that transgresses various art forms, socio-political issues, and conventions. In keeping with the challenges of the 21st century, the work examines the integration of theatre creation and visual-aural installation, as well as performance practices that explore compositional structure.
I Am Here communicates through a single, masked character as ‘Man-Woman’ and a physical genre that includes digital art projections, music-soundscapes, and poetic word. I Am Here explores the comedic and tragic aspects associated with aging and a culture that we have created but find difficult to tackle. I Am Here questions the socio-political values placed on youth and beauty, and is about coming to terms with the challenges of aging. The content of the work focuses on the body as the architecture of who we are, and is intended to call attention to aspects of age in an effort to confront our views and practices. It is hoped that in examining the question of what it means to age, I Am Here can shift our focus from a limited view of ourselves to the recognition of a life well lived.
Currently, I Am Here is being developed into a film. Watch for it in film festivals in 2022.
